WM Irvin Elementary

Spring Fest

💙💛What an Incredible Week at W.M. Irvin! 🦅

It was a fantastic week at W.M. Irvin Elementary! Our Battle of the Books Team and Science Olympiad Team competed and truly soared like Eagles—we are so proud of their hard work and accomplishments. We also celebrated students who earned positive referrals, recognizing their outstanding behavior and leadership.

Our Living and Learning classes participated in the Special Olympics, where they did an amazing job and had a wonderful time. Our 2nd graders are still talking about seeing the American bison at the zoo, and some of our 5th graders experienced their very first roller coaster—what an exciting memory!

We wrapped up the week with several special events, including the MPHS Class of 2026 Senior Walk and our annual Spring Fest. It was a joy to see our 1st and 2nd grade students perform, and families enjoyed hot dogs, snow cones, popcorn, cotton candy, games, face painting, and the silent auction. It was truly a great night celebrating with our W.M. Irvin family, community, and our incoming kindergarten families.
Looking ahead, we have several exciting events coming up, including field trips, PBIS and Encore celebrations, and Field Day. We hope families are able to join us when possible!
Our 1st grade students will be going on a field trip to Zootastic this Friday. Please remember that both payment and a signed permission slip are required for your child to attend.

Curriculum

Arts & Letters Logo

Arts & Letters!!

In Module 3 of Arts & Letters, students in grades 2–5 are building strong reading, writing, and thinking skills by exploring meaningful texts and sharing their ideas about what they read.
Throughout the module, students:
  • Read engaging stories and informational texts
  • Talk about characters, ideas, and important details
  • Practice using evidence from the text to explain their thinking
  • Learn new vocabulary and strengthen reading comprehension
Across the three units, students grow more confident in:
  • Understanding grade-level texts
  • Sharing ideas during class discussions
  • Writing clear responses about what they read
By the end of Module 3, students are better prepared to think critically, express their ideas clearly, and connect what they read to the world around them. These skills help set the foundation for future learning across all subjects.

To keep the learning going beyond the classroom, here are some grade-level tips for families to support and extend learning at home:

STEM News

Stem design logo
STEM is a big part of what your child experiences at school! Through hands-on activities and real-world connections, students are learning how to think critically, solve problems, and work together. This year, all students had the chance to go on a STEM-based field trip to a park, where they explored nature, made observations, and connected what they have been learning in class to the world around them.

In the building, our Kindergarten students are incorporating STEM through their play-based centers! In their classrooms, they have created “Target stores” with different departments. Students are measuring and comparing fruit, planting flowers, and learning how a business works—all in a fun, age-appropriate way.  In Inquiry Lab, our first graders are building and launching straw rockets while our fourth graders are creating their light houses! In Media, our students read a book called, Whirligig, about a man that built windmills out of scrap material. Our younger students are building wind socks while our older students are building their very own windmills with recyclable materials! It is exciting to see their creativity and curiosity grow through these experiences!

2nd Grade Chicks Hatched
Our chicks have officially hatched in our second grade classrooms—such an exciting experience for our students!  Our third graders have also been making great connections across subjects. As part of their ELA unit, they read about the artist Jackson Pollock, created their own paintings inspired by his work, and wrote about how their artwork connects to his unique style.

Garden Team
Our garden team has been hard at work in the mornings getting our beds ready for spring planting! So far, we have planted radishes, carrots, and lettuce, and in the next few weeks we will be adding sweet potatoes for t

Positivity Project (P2) - Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence

Dear Families,

This week, our school will focus on the character strength of Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence. This means noticing and valuing the world's beauty and people's skills and not taking things for granted.

Appreciation of Beauty and Excellence involves recognizing and enjoying what is admirable. Positive psychology identifies three types of goodness: physical beauty (like sunsets or music), exceptional skills or talents, and moral goodness (like character strengths). Appreciating beauty can inspire awe, skills can generate admiration, and moral goodness can elevate us. These feelings help us forget ourselves and find more joy and meaning in the world.

This strength helps individuals experience positive emotions and connect with the world around them. It is outward-facing, focusing on external beauty and excellence, often leading to deep absorption in awe or admiration, which can help alleviate anxieties. It is also linked to other strengths, such as gratitude, curiosity, love of learning, and purpose.

To practice and encourage this strength at home, please visit The Positivity Project’s mobile-friendly P2 for Families (available in English and Spanish), where you will watch a video together and discuss a quote and three questions. Below are links to this week’s P2 for Families lessons. Click on the grade level that best meets your child’s needs.
